LOCAL ROTARIAN (Marie Gerrard Kilmore) PROVIDES POLIO VACCINE TO INDIAN CHILDREN
It is only 50-60 years ago when Iron Lungs were widely used to help Polio victims stay alive. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children each year. Polio is only one plane ride away from our children.

Jennifer Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Canada, was Rotary International’s president for 2022-2023, the first woman to hold that office in Rotary’s 119 year history. Stephanie Urchick, of the Rotary Club of McMurray, Pennsylvania, USA, is the President of Rotary International for 2024-25. To reflect these achievements, we are particularly enthusiastic about growing our women membership numbers by seeking those who are ready to volunteer and give something back to our community, our country and others less fortunate than us around the globe.

WHAT IS POLIO?
Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus is spread person to person. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine - one which Rotary and our partners use to immunise over 2.5 billion children worldwide. Only 2 countries remain endemic - Afghanistan & Pakistan. We have reduced cases by 99.9% since 1988 until we end polio forever, every child is at risk. Beware, Polio is only one plane ride away.

In the 1950s, Emi Chemat’s sister, Tish Abiera-Reyes, contracted polio at a celebration in Manila, along with many other children. Tish was fortunate to have access to medical care, undergoing 13 surgeries before age 21. Thanks to this, she was able to live a vibrant life—driving, dancing, swimming, and reclaiming the freedom polio had tried to take. But not all survivors had the same resources; many faced lifelong challenges and disabilities.
Since 1988, Rotary has reduced polio cases worldwide by 99.9%, but the fight isn’t over. As long as polio exists anywhere, it’s a threat everywhere. Join Rotary in the fight to #EndPolio and help protect future generations. Every donation brings us closer to a polio-free world.

B41-POLIO IS ONLY A PLANE RIDE AWAY
A 22-year-old Pakistani student was released from an Australian hospital, after recovering from the polio virus. A national health alert was issued in Australia after the student was diagnosed with polio, the first case of the virus in the country in 21 years.
The student contracted the disease while visiting his native Pakistan, one of the four remaining polio-endemic countries. He experienced symptoms, including initial paralysis, and recovered at Melbourne's Box Hill Hospital. He was isolated from the community until he tested negative for the virus.
