LANDCARE & ROTARY TREE PLANTING DAY

Sunday 18 June 2023

3500 trees planted. Over 100 volunteers fed and watered. What an awesome day. And the weather god was very kind to us. Rotary Club Southern Mitchell, a huge pat on the back.

LANDCARE & ROTARY TREE PLANTING DAY

Sunday 18 June 2023

Once again, we have chosen to work in the Sugarloaf Catchment area, a large area feeding the creeks that flow into the Goulburn River and eventually into the Murray River. In normal conditions, thirty (30) tonnes of salt per square kilometre leaves this area annually. Since the inception of this project 23 years ago, over 123,000 native trees have been planted on bare hilltops and other areas within the district.

Native trees and shrubs are propagated from locally collected seeds in the Glenaroua district. Rotary, along with Glenaroua Land Management Group and other community groups, plant these trees and shrubs in areas which will best reduce salt flows into the area. We plan our activities around teams of 3 or 4 people, with each team being responsible for:

• Planting the trees into prepared ground. (no digging required).

• Placing and sinking tree guards to protect them from the elements until they are established.

Rotary will provide the specialised equipment to assist with planting the trees, but you will need to bring Strong Footwear, Gardening Gloves, Weather Appropriate Clothing (warm), and Wet Weather Gear in case of inclement weather.

  • The day will commence at 09:00 am on site, where Rotary Members will give further directions.

  • Morning tea will be provided and planting activities will conclude at approximately 12:30pm with a BBQ lunch on site around 1:30pm.

Tree Planting
Planning Meeting

Ian D, Elizabeth M and Roger M from the Rotary Club of Southern Mitchell joined others from Glenaroua Landcare, the Rotary Club of Manningham and property managers to view the site for our annual planting weekend in 2023 of some 3,500 trees along Camerons Creek west of Broadford. Planting date is June 17 & 18 2023.

Not quite 3,000 plants in the ground – as we filled the site, the remaining plants will go into another area to act as a windbreak between two paddocks elsewhere on the property.

98 volunteers + Amanda & Mark (landholders) helped over the 2 days to enable this event to occur. The students & younger participants where a great help (due to the many, more mature volunteers, waiting for or not long had hip and / or knee replacements – (from overheard conversations)) ) and did the majority of the planting, while others distributed plants, guards & stakes where needed, as well as some planting – amazing teamwork that just flowed over the site.

Thanks for the wonderful morning tea and then lunch which revived everyone and it was fantastic to hear the banter going on – the only formal complaint was there needs to be more caramel slice.

And Mark & Amanda for letting us take over your property for a couple of days and do this event.  Without landholders on board willing to participate and make such sites available this project would not continue
